Poets are made, not born. Moreover, most poets are self-made. You must be your own coach and training staff and you must practice alone. This unique book will help you get through those early discouraging times and set you on a path of self-discovery and ever-expanding satisfactions.
While directed toward the fledgling poet, the general Reader, too, will find this book rewarding, for all of us use metaphor to make sense of Life’s daily onslaughts. It is metaphor, the ability to look at something and be reminded of something else, that makes us different from all other organisms. Metaphor truly is the universal mechanism of invention and change.
Your dedication to become a poet is a lifetime challenge. As your understanding of poetry begins to grow exponentially, you will one day smile to yourself as you ask, "Why did I wait so long to learn about this stuff?"
About the Author: David R. Van Steenburgh
In his early literary days David R. Van Steenburgh always considered himself an unpublished novelist, and soon after moving to Litchfield, Connecticu he established and led a series of "Read-Outs" at the libraries in Litchfield and Torrington. He moved to Litchfield, CT with his wife and three children, and has lived there ever since. It was during this time that he had an accidental collision with the poet Walt Whitman which he says, "changed my inner life." Soon after this he began writing his long running Litchfield Connecticut newspaper column, "Poet's Corner" in which he discussed a poem, poet, or some aspect of poetry in each column. Finding the Metaphor is his first non-fiction title.
